Winner, two regional Emmy Awards and a 2005 Peabody Award

Pat Bates is an award-winning producer and storyteller whose work has been showcased nationally and internationally.  As a staff producer at Dateline NBC, CNN Productions, Fox News Productions and WCVB-TV, Pat has put her journalistic signature on hundreds of stories.

From documenting the plight of coal miners in Virginia to the intense rivalry of Italy’s famed medieval horse race, the Palio of Siena, Pat has amassed a collection of stories and characters.  She has also covered the stories of young teens caught up in inner city violence as well as breaking stories like the Ennis Cosby murder case and the search for the Unabomber.  Additionally, Pat spent a decade as a freelance field producer for the Oprah Winfrey Show covering a range of topics from domestic violence to celebrities.  She continues freelance work with Harpo, on the “Where Are They Now?” series, documenting the lives of headliners and newsmakers.

She has worked with the FBI on an Investigation Discovery Network (“I.D.”) television series, chronicling some its most famous cases, with FBI profilers and agents.  She also worked on another “I.D.” series- this time, a fact-based murder-mystery show!

Pat’s work has appeared on NBC, CNN, Fox, PBS, Lifetime TV and the Investigation Discovery Network (“I.D.”), and others.

In 1991, Pat was one of twelve journalists worldwide, to receive a prestigious William Benton Award in Broadcast Journalism to further her journalism career at the University of Chicago. That program culminated in a study-tour to Uzbekistan, Latvia and Russia.

Pat has won two regional Emmy Awards and has been nominated for 7 others.  She was also the recipient of a 2005 Peabody Award, along with her colleagues at Los Angeles’ KCET where she was Senior Field Producer on a ground-breaking child development show.  In addition, she holds two Associated Press Awards from the Massachusetts chapter of AP and three awards from the National Association of Black Journalists.  Pat earned a Master of Arts degree from Emerson College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Spelman College.

It has been Pat’s lifelong quest to tell stories that touch people’s lives.  Doing so has given her a great deal of personal pleasure as well as professional satisfaction.
